Painting on Bottles

I began painting on bottles as a fun activity, now I am recreating famous artwork on them!

During the summer of 2019, I spent a week with a dear family friend. Because we both liked to create art (and we were running out of activities to do), we decided to bring out a few old bottles they had stored in their basement and just paint whatever. Because they had no other use for them, we simply kept painting the bottles throughout the week. As we painted, I practiced my editing skills by creating short videos of the process and posted them onto Instagram over the summer.

I learned the best techniques for helping the design stand out, like painting a white layer before adding any color.

Over the course of the week, I created five bottle paintings, trying new methods and designs and learning how this new substrate worked best.

During this week, I painted the bottle that would inspire my first commission, the Hailey Clouds Trilogy, as seen in the image to the right.

These posts on my Instagram started to gain a lot of attention and I put out a survey poll asking what else I should try to paint on these bottles.

I received a whole bunch of different answers, from Spongebob characters to underwater themed scenes, but I ended up following through with the idea of re-creating famous artworks. When I returned home, I discovered that my family kept its own collection of Coronita beer bottles (they are smaller than a common wine or beer bottle) and decided to use the techniques I learned over the summer on those.

I painted the classic Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, Waterlilies with a Japanese Bridge by Claude Monet, and four others.

They have continued to be some of my most popular posts on my Instagram page and am very proud of each bottle I have created.

You can find my collection in my Gallery and see what other famous paintings I have recreated so far, along with their coordinating bottle caps!
